Y-Drive - Brass Coupler Troubleshooting
Y-Drive - Brass Coupler Troubleshooting
This video guides you through troubleshooting the brass coupler in your machine's Y-Drive. The brass coupler connects the Y-Drive motor to the lead screw, which moves the polishing bed along the Y-axis. Over time, the coupler may become loose, misaligned, or show signs of wear, affecting the machine's performance.
Key Steps Covered in the Video:
-
Inspecting the Brass Coupler:
-
Learn how to visually inspect the coupler for any signs of damage or wear, such as cracks or deformation.
-
Check for any unusual movement or looseness that could indicate a problem.
-
-
Re-aligning the Coupler:
-
Follow the steps to correctly align the coupler if it has shifted or become misaligned. Proper alignment ensures smooth movement of the polishing head along the Y-axis.
-
-
Testing the Machine:
-
After adjustments, see how to run a test to ensure that the Y-Drive is functioning correctly and that the brass coupler is properly secured and aligned.
-
Why This Matters:
Maintaining the brass coupler is essential for the smooth operation of your machine. Regular checks and adjustments help prevent mechanical issues and ensure consistent polishing quality.
Step-by-step Instructions:
(1) Turn Off the Machine:
-
Ensure the machine is powered off.
-
Remove the power and data cables (optional but recommended).
(2) Disconnect the Stepper Motor:
-
Disconnect the stepper motor to allow manual adjustments.
(3) Manually Move the Spindle Assembly:
-
Step 1: Rotate the X-drive screw to manually move the spindle assembly towards the left end (the blue mount holding the gravity Z assembly).
-
Tip: This process can be greasy, so it’s recommended to wear gloves or rotate the blue shaft coupling attached to the right end.
-
Step 2: Continue rotating until the spindle assembly is approximately 1 cm from the sensor on the left end. Be careful not to damage the sensor.
(4) Remove the Stepper Motor:
-
Step 1: Use a 2.5mm Allen key (included in the kit) to remove the 4 hex screws on the inner right side of the machine that hold the stepper motor in place (image and videos in the link).
-
Tip: If needed, reorient the machine by resting it on its right side, propped up by the stepper motor.
-
Step 2: To loosen tough screws, insert the short side of the Allen key into the hex screw, then use the leverage of the long side to turn it. A quarter or half turn should loosen it enough. For inner screws, make smaller turns due to limited space.
(5) Shift the X-Driveshaft:
-
Shift the now-loose X-driveshaft to the right to remove it from the left bearing.
(6) Unscrew the Brass Coupling:
-
Rotate the driveshaft to unscrew the brass coupling from it while keeping the spring in place.
-
Continue turning the driveshaft to shift the spindle assembly until you reach the open end of the driveshaft. Ensure there’s enough space inside to insert the brass coupling but do not completely remove the driveshaft.
(7) Reassemble the Spindle Assembly:
-
Insert the brass coupling into the spindle assembly and screw both back onto the driveshaft, keeping the brass coupling in place, until the assembly is 2-3 cm from the end.
(8) Remount the Driveshaft:
-
Place the driveshaft back into the bearing slot on the left side.
(9) Reattach the Stepper Motor:
-
Reinstall the stepper motor by screwing it back into place.
-
Reconnect the Stepper motor cable
